Before Shrek stole the spotlight, DreamWorks gave us The Road to El Dorado (2000) — a colorful, witty, and music-filled animated adventure that has since become a cult favorite. Starring Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh as two charming con men on a quest for gold, this film delivers humor, heart, and some of the most underrated animation of the early 2000s.
The story follows Tulio (Kevin Kline) and Miguel (Kenneth Branagh), two small-time swindlers in 16th-century Spain who accidentally acquire a map to the legendary city of gold, El Dorado. After a daring escape from the authorities, they find themselves lost at sea, only to wash ashore in the New World.
By sheer luck (and quick thinking), they stumble upon the mythical city and are mistaken for gods by its inhabitants. As they enjoy royal treatment, they must navigate suspicions, temptations, and their own friendship — all while deciding whether to take the gold and run or protect the city from Spanish conquest.
The Road to El Dorado was part of DreamWorks’ early push to compete with Disney in the animated film market. The movie’s vibrant visuals were inspired by Central American art and architecture, giving it a distinct and rich color palette. Music legends Elton John and Tim Rice (of The Lion King fame) provided the soundtrack, giving the film a unique and catchy musical identity.
Despite a strong creative team and high production values, the film underperformed at the box office but later found a devoted fanbase through home video and streaming.
Critics gave the film mixed reviews, praising its animation and voice acting but noting a predictable storyline. However, audiences have grown more fond of it over the years, recognizing it as an underrated adventure-comedy.
The Road to El Dorado (2000) may not have been a box office giant, but it remains a charming, visually stunning, and endlessly quotable animated adventure. Whether you’re revisiting it for nostalgia or discovering it for the first time, it’s a reminder that sometimes the greatest treasure is the journey itself — and the friendships we find along the way.
Give it a watch and let yourself get lost in the golden streets of El Dorado!
