From the directors of There's Something About Mary, the Farrelly Brothers, comes the outrageously funny and at times shocking comedy Me, Myself & Irene (2000). Starring Jim Carrey in a dual role and Renée Zellweger as his love interest, this film is a fast-paced, farcical road movie that delves into the absurd world of a Rhode Island state trooper with a severe case of split-personality disorder. The film is a hilarious exploration of one man's inner battle, where his nice-guy persona and his foul-mouthed alter ego are forced to coexist, leading to a series of chaotic and unforgettable misadventures. If you are in the mood for a no-holds-barred comedy that pushes the boundaries of good taste, this film is a must-watch.
Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey) is a mild-mannered, kind-hearted Rhode Island State Trooper who is a pushover in every sense of the word. After his wife leaves him for a limousine driver, Charlie is left to raise their three sons. As the years go by, Charlie's anger and frustration build up inside him, until one day he snaps, developing a second, more aggressive personality named Hank Evans. Hank is everything Charlie is not: he's a foul-mouthed, short-tempered, and overly-masculine bully. Charlie's and Hank's personalities frequently switch back and forth, creating a series of comically awkward and embarrassing situations.
As a solution, Charlie is put on medication, but he is eventually assigned a simple task: to escort the beautiful Irene P. Waters (Renée Zellweger), a woman accused of a hit-and-run, back to New York. During their trip, Charlie's medication is accidentally lost, and he is forced to manage his two warring personalities while on the road with Irene. Their journey becomes a wild and chaotic adventure as they are pursued by dirty cops and an old associate of Irene's, all while a romance begins to blossom between Irene and the two very different personalities of Charlie/Hank. The film's humor comes from the outrageous situations created by Charlie’s unpredictable personality switches and his desperate attempts to win Irene's heart, despite Hank's best efforts to sabotage him.
The film features a central cast who navigate the hilarious chaos:
The film was directed and written by the Farrelly Brothers, Peter and Bobby, who are known for their signature brand of gross-out and absurd humor. The film also features a number of cameo appearances, including cameos from several members of the rock band Foo Fighters. The screenplay for the film was written by the Farrelly Brothers, along with Mike Cerrone. While the film faced some controversy for its portrayal of mental illness, its comedic approach and Jim Carrey's committed performance were often highlighted by both fans and critics.
