G20 (2025)
Despicable Me 4, released July 3, 2024, is the latest entry in Illumination’s smash animation franchise. Gru (Steve Carell), now an Anti‑Villain League agent, reconnects with his high school rival Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) during a reunion. Chaos ensues when Maxime escapes prison and targets Gru’s infant son with a monstrous cockroach transformation device.
Gru’s family is relocated under witness protection to a suburban town called Mayflower. His daughters befriend Poppy, a teen trainee villain who blackmails Gru into helping with a mascot heist. Meanwhile, the AVL experiments with super‑powered Mega Minions. When Gru Jr. is kidnapped, the Mega Minions are reactivated to help rescue him. Gru breaks through the brainwashing, embraces his family bond, and defeats Maxime.
The film ends with a penitent Gru singing “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” with Maxime in prison, surrounded by past franchise villains. A final family picnic reunites Gru, Lucy, the girls, Dr. Nefario, and the Minions—signaling emotional growth and closure. The movie underscores love’s power in transforming lives.
“Despicable Me 4” grossed nearly US $970 million worldwide—making the franchise the first animated series to surpass US $5 billion in total box office. While critics applauded its familiarity and humor, they criticized its thin plot and unruly structure. Rotten Tomatoes rated it around 56 %, the lowest in the series.
Despicable Me 4 offers energetic slapstick humor and nostalgic callbacks, but it leans harder on gags than emotional weight. Fans may enjoy the spectacle, though many critics felt it lacked coherence beyond the jokes—and still, kids laughed most of all.
